Hufflepuff’s Angela Ditianquin and Katrina Cirineo displayed remarkable perseverance to claim the Gold Medal in the Women's Doubles Badminton event at PalaCASSan 2024, held on November 28 at the TSU Gymnasium.
The duo from Hufflepuff remained undefeated throughout the competition, winning the championship match in straight sets, defeated Ravenclaw's Kate Milla and Sofia Nicole Sarmiento, securing a 21-12, 21-9 victory to take home the Gold while Ravenclaw settled for Silver after a valiant effort, but ultimately fell short in the final.
Earlier in the tournament, Ditianquin and Cirineo faced a tough challenge in the semifinals against Slytherin’s Maia Ayla Fritzie Ong and Nike Andrea Banag, the match was closely contested, with Hufflepuff edging out Slytherin in two tight sets, 22-16, 21-20, to secure their spot in the final.
In an interview, Ditianquin and Cirineo expressed their happiness after their victorious win despite Cirineo’s injury.
“Siyempre, masaya kami kasi this is our first time sa ganitong sportsfest tas nag-champion,” Cirineo said.
Ditianquin added, “Masaya siyempre, ah noong una kinakabahan kasi injured ‘yung kasama kasama ko pero kinaya naman,”
When asked about their preparation, Cirineo admitted that she got her injury during their training, leaving them with little preparation for the game.
“Actually po, wala kaming maayos na practice kasi po nung week one ng training namin, na-injured po yung kaliwang paa ko,” Cirineo said.
Meanwhile, Gryffindor’s Cheska Manite and Danica Romero settled for bronze. They had an easy win after Slytherin’s Maia Ayla Fritzie Ong and Nike Andrea Banag failed to show up within the three-minute defaulting time.
Despite Katrina Cirineo’s injury, which limited their preparation and posed a significant challenge throughout the tournament, Hufflepuff’s triumph is a testament to their resilience and teamwork.
