Students from Team 5 of AB COMM 4A under the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) hosts captivating fashion runway seminar held yesterday, March 13, 2025, at the Theater Room, Smith Hall Building.
With the theme "Conscious Threads: A Seminar on Promoting Mindful Consumption in the Fashion Industry," the event explored various aspects of sustainable fashion and its impact on the environment. Guest speakers Buena Sawit, George Buid, and Andrea Sawit from Fashion Revolution shared insights and answered students' inquiries.
Ms. Buena Sawit, a graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in Clothing Technology, discussed the origins and growth of Fashion Revolution Philippines. She highlighted the organization’s mission as a global non-profit movement advocating for an ethical fashion industry that prioritizes environmental sustainability and values people over profit.
“In summary you want to create a fashion ecosystem that respects the environment, respects people—recognize global diversity and build collaborative solution towards an effective system for change,” she emphasized.
Moreover, Ms. Buena Sawit acknowledges the increasing awareness of national sustainability efforts and views it as a hopeful sign for the Fashion Revolution movement and expressed appreciation for the student-led initiative.
“We’re thrilled to know na maraming estudyante even outside Metro Manila that’s interested in national sustainability…It’s a positive and and hopeful information that we’re gathered as fashion revolution.” she said.
Furthermore, the seminar featured an open forum, allowing students to engage directly with the speakers and discuss various aspects of the fashion industry.
The event was spearheaded by Thimothy Addelaide Yvonne Perez, Justin De Aquino, Irish Kate Landingin, Angel Calaguas, Althea Louisse Pangan, and Jean Eishley Tabayoyong.
In an interview, Ms. Perez shared the motivation behind choosing the seminar's theme.
“Napansin namin na parang redundant na yung ibang topics…why not choose something new, and since about awareness naman kasi and promoting sustainable fashion, sayang naman kasi kung hindi natin ise-share sa ibang students,” Perez said.
The seminar concluded with the awarding of certificates to the guest speakers and participants.
