Sociopolitical organization — Striving Towards Empowerment and Progress (STEP), hosted a Crime Prevention and Mental health Awareness seminar in the afternoon of September 28, 2024, at TSU-Main AVR.

The first seminar tackled different topics under crime prevention — with the theme; “BANTAY BAYAN: Para sa ligtas na lipunan.” Guest speaker and registered criminologist, Ms. Janelle Duran Nwadigo, MSCJ, educated student attendees on the anatomy of a crime.

“Tandaan niyo lang yung tatlo: Instrumentality, Motive, and Opportunity... Para daw mangyari ang isang krimen, dapat present ang mga sangkap na ito,” she addressed.

Ms, Nwadigo also presented the different types of crimes as she emphasized the importance of this seminar on instilling a more vigilant self-habit towards the students.

“Napagandang initiative din nito, dahil makakayanan niyong magtaguyod... Ng mapagmatyag at mapagmalasakit na kultura,” she noted.

Moreover, the second seminar focused on mental health awareness, featuring Ms. Jazmin Joy E. Dizon, MAED, RGC, RPm, CMHFR, CHRA, an instructor from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Psychology Department, as the keynote speaker.

With the theme, “Paghinga at Pahinga: Ikaw naman muna,” Ms. Dizon inspired the audience with the importance of self-care as she leans on an interactive approach towards the crowd.

“Self-love, unahin mo muna yung sarili mo, not because you're selfish, but for you to be able to take care of other people efficiently as well,” she stated.

“Actually lahat naman tayo na tao diba, may hangganan, so of course there are also times when you feel good naman din... So with that — let us consider ourselves like a cellphone,” she added.

Ms. Dizon explained that a person is like a cellphone, because people need to recharge their battery in the form of self-care to function properly.

To conclude her talk, she engaged the attendees in a version of the "paper cabbage game," where participants shared their thoughts and personal experiences related to various statements about self-care, distinguishing between facts and myths.

Meanwhile, in an interview, STEP President Avril Digap discussed the organization's upcoming initiatives.

“Makaka-asa po sila na magkakaroon pa kami ng maraming seminars... Yung dalawa po namin na topic is na-move siya ng November 25, which is yung official day na nagstart yung 18-day campaign ng violence against women,” President Digap said.

The event marks STEP's first seminar under Pres Digap's term, and he ensured that this will not be the last for this academic year.
