Led by the faculty of the Department of English Language Studies (DELS), parents and guardians of students under the AB ELS program attended the Parent-Teacher Meeting held at the Theater Room, Smith Hall Building, TSU-Main Campus, this September 21.
The meeting saw the appointment of Parents’ Officers for each year level, with their respective representatives taking the positions of Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Auditor of the department’s Parent Council, while Mr. Raymond Quinacman was reelected as their President.
Mr. Howard Aries Ronquillo, Instructor I and Learning and Resource Management Head of DELS, took the opportunity to explain that the position of a parent officer is not only limited to responsibilities, as it can also be a privilege, emphasizing that the parent officers will be among the first to know about departmental updates.
Additionally, Reicel Anne Gelindon – president of TSU Linguistic Society, the official student organization of DELS, featured their achievements, outlined future activities, and introduced the voluntary 70 pesos contribution to support the organization’s initiatives.
“From 4th-year up until 1st-year, yung engagement ng student-teacher-parent is okay naman and... yung pinaka naging agenda namin sa Linguistic Society ay doon sa 70 pesos voluntary contribution fund, and lahat naman ng parent and student ay nag-agree doon sa magiging contribution ng mga estudyante," President Gelindon said in an interview.
She further stated that the funds will go towards providing assistance and incentives to the students who will be representing the department in various competitions inside and outside the university, among others.
Meanwhile, Asst.Prof. Franchete Caingat and Chairperson of DELS, took the floor to explain how the Linguistic Society’s funds are being allocated and assured the parents that the funds would be used solely for the students' benefit.
In an interview with Chairperson Caingat, she shared that the meeting was conducted in-person, compared to last academic year, which was held online, for them to personally address the questions and concerns coming from the parents.
“It's an avenue for us to connect with the parents personally, so we conducted this parent-teacher meeting for us to present accomplishments of the department, and to gather support from the parents,” she said.
Furthermore, Associate Professor III and College Research Chairperson, Dr. Myrel Santiago, and Faculty Lecturers Henry Andres, April Anne Sabbaluca, and Noreen Soliven started off each session with the presentation of the department’s accomplishments, which highlighted its efforts in academic research and participation in international conferences.
The department vows to be transparent with their budget allocation and calls for the support of the parent body through voluntary contributions which will be used to the benefit of the students.
