College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) male representative, Mr. Dale Calvin Castañeda, was crowned as the Mr. ASEAN in the recently concluded Mr. and Ms. ASEAN yesterday, October 16, at the Tarlac State University Hotel, Lucinda Campus.

The crowd went wild as faculty lecturers, Mr. Castañeda from the Communication department, along with Ms. Trishia Kaye Jimenez from the English Language Studies department, graced the stage while wearing Cambodian-inspired national costumes.

After showcasing their colorful costumes, candidates were randomly selected to answer a general question about their chosen country.

Representatives from the Library Management and Services office and other colleges were asked about the country they chose to represent and the costume they wore, while Mr. Castañeda was asked a different question by one of the judges.

He emphasized the importance of communication in intercultural understanding when asked, “As a Filipino, what can you do to promote intercultural understanding among ASEAN countries?”

“I believe that in order for us to have intercultural understanding we should develop intercultural communication […] Because if there is proper communication, there is a complementation on the messages that we actually imply or give to other people, there will always be development and understanding,” he answered.

Meanwhile, Ms. Jimenez expressed her gratitude despite not being able to secure a spot in the competition.

“I’m still happy even though I wasn’t able to bag any award but still, this is my first experience, this is still nerve-racking for me. I am happy that it goes well and the outcome was good,” she expressed.

Aside from the Office of Library Management and Services, CASS bets also faced representatives from the College of Business Administration (CBA), College of Engineering (COE), College of Science (COS), College of Public Administration and Governance (CPAG), and College of Education (COED).

The event served not only as a competition but a celebration of the 57th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Day, signifying the strong relationship of ASEAN countries.
